We’re delighted to welcome Stephen Britt to The Legal Director team.
Hailing from Melbourne Australia, he came to London in 1988 shortly after qualification to do a two-year secondment at Slaughter and May. That spell extended somewhat, and he is still living and working in London and loving exploring the city on his bike.
He went in-house in 1995, wanting broader involvement in business strategy and decisions than he felt was possible as an external lawyer (not to mention being able to work more reasonable, family-friendly hours). Meeting and working with people at different stages of their career, with disparate and diverse experience, skills and ambitions, has always been and remains one of the greatest attractions for Stephen of being in-house counsel.
Stephen has gained extensive experience of a full range of commercial, corporate, regulatory and general business issues during his career, which has primarily been spent in the insurance industry. He has advised businesses ranging from start-ups to multi-nationals on issues such as buying and selling businesses, litigation, financial services regulation, corporate governance and day-to-day commercial contracts. He has over 20 years’ experience as a company secretary, working with boards and committees (including audit, remuneration and nominations committees) to develop and implement appropriate and compliant processes and procedures and to respond to changes in the regulatory environment.
His clients value his business oriented, down-to-earth approach and appreciate how he fights their corner to solve real issues and bring real value. He approaches his work with diligence, fairness and a good degree of pragmatism, always looking for proportionate and workable solutions.
Stephen joined TLD attracted to our model of providing experienced legal directors to SMEs. He feels he can make a real difference in these businesses and is looking forward to doing the work he enjoys most, to contributing and connecting on a deeper level.
When he’s not working, you’ll find him on his bike. He has already done some mammoth rides including Land’s End to John O’Groats, London – Edinburgh – London and Paris – Brest – Paris. His daughter’s wedding later this year ruled out lengthy foreign forays until 2024, when his ambition is to cycle the length of Europe from the northernmost part of the European mainland – North Cape in Norway – to Tarifa at the southern tip of Spain, clocking up a whopping 7,500km.
