Introducing Mark Duckworth – one of our newest recruits. Mark comes to us with vast in-house experience in blue-chip organisations and the public sector (including PFIs), in outsourcing, the travel industry and most recently the pharmaceutical sector, working at a senior legal leadership and strategic level.
We catch up with him here to find out a bit more about his experience and background and what he likes to do when he’s not at work.
Q&A with Mark Duckworth
So Mark, can you tell us about any specialisms you have?
Well, like all General Counsel, I’m a generalist but I have done a lot of commercial work in my time – licensing, distribution, supply & manufacturing and e-commerce/IT agreements & arrangements. I am also experienced with corporate transactional work, including asset/share sale and purchase arrangements. And I’d have to say I’m quite handy on employment and HR matters too!
And what work do you particularly enjoy?
I like anything where I can work closely with the client. I enjoy good teamwork and enjoy the process of seeing a project through from inception to completion. I really like anything new, innovative and interesting. I believe we should all be able to have fun at work!
What attributes would you say your clients value about you?
I think they value my flexibility, experience and knowledge and my good sense of humour. Like I said, work should be fun (at times!). I also think they value my honesty – I’m straight talking and give clear unequivocal commercial advice.
Can you recall an achievement in your career that you’re especially proud of?
I’m not really one for blowing my own trumpet! I’ve been involved in a number of complex and innovative deals – such as the first ever property outsourcing from the Government to the private sector. That feels like a landmark moment.
I’ve helped sell two companies that I’ve worked in, including Trillium to Land Securities. That made me proud.
However, most of all, I’m proudest of seeing the people I’ve worked with and managed, grow and develop and achieve great things and be good people.
I’d also have to cite surviving 30 years in the profession as an achievement!
And, why did you choose to work with TLD?
I am looking for an opportunity to work with different clients in multiple sectors in exciting growth conditions. It gives me a chance to use my significant In-house skills in a new and interesting way. TLD has a unique and fascinating offering – it gives me a chance to work with like-minded legal professionals and be flexible in how I provide legal services.
Finally, what do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I love the theatre, sport, travel and current affairs. I’m a keen (if somewhat slow these days) runner – I’ve clocked up five marathons. I am also, however, a real foodie and I must admit, they’re not always compatible hobbies!
