Bollfilter UK is the British arm of the BOLL GROUP, a German-headquartered manufacturer of industrial filtration systems for oil, gas and water applications. The wider group, Boll & Kirch Filterbau GmbH, is based in Kerpen and supplies filtration technology across sectors including marine, renewable energy, water treatment and engine protection. Bollfilter UK is led by Managing Director Joe Dow.
Bollfilter UK’s terms and conditions and contract review documentation were based on material from its German head office and needed reworking to be properly UK law compliant. Additional contract documents were also needed to enable sales involving other supplier partners. Alongside this, the business’s data protection policies and procedures had not been reviewed for several years, so an assessment was needed to check for any gaps and bring them up to date with current law and practice.
Joe first came across The Legal Director through a webinar, before completing The Legal Director’s Business Risk Scan with TLD‘s CEO, Sarah Clark. The scan is designed to give business leaders a clear, honest picture of where their legal exposure sits, working through questions tailored to a business of their size and sector rather than a generic checklist. For Bollfilter UK, it confirmed the business had good systems in place overall, while flagging two specific areas of potential exposure: terms and conditions, and data protection. Joe found the process straightforward and the questions genuinely relevant and was struck by how closely the results matched his own instinct for where the gaps lay. “The Business Risk Scan really reflected where I thought we’d be,” he says. “It’s reassuring to know the areas you need to work on are highlighted as that, and the rest is confirmed to be running well.” This gave him real confidence in the accuracy of the tool, and reassurance about the areas that scored well.
The Legal Director’s James Godbee was appointed to take on the two areas identified by the risk scan. The first piece of work involved rebuilding Bollfilter UK’s terms and conditions, standard supplier contracts and contract review documentation, including updating material from the German head office into a form appropriate for the UK. The second was a data protection review, checking existing policies and practices and making recommendations for changes, keeping them proportionate and relevant to the business.
The Business Risk Scan gave Bollfilter UK something many businesses never get: an accurate, independent read on where its legal risk actually sits, rather than a guess. That clarity turned a vague sense of risk into two clear, fixable priorities. As a direct result, Bollfilter UK now has an updated suite of contract documentation ready to be integrated into its new ERP system. And the team has guidance on what steps to prioritise to keep its data protection compliance up to date.
Joe also valued how quickly James got up to speed with the business, describing the whole process as smooth and requiring little management on his side. “James was very easy to deal with,” he says. “He got the brief quickly, understood the size and type of business we are and what we needed, and executed the work exactly as required. We’re very pleased with the outcome.” This kind of fit doesn’t happen by accident.
