Andrew is a highly experienced General Counsel. He has supported diverse businesses in a range of sectors, including ASOS.com, Berry Bros & Rudd, Associated British Foods plc, Bristow Group and Alpha. He credits this industry hopping for giving him the breadth of experience that makes him such a great fit for TLD. He says: “I like working for different businesses. You always learn something – and I’m lucky enough to have dealt with most things during my career.”
He enjoys finding out how businesses tick and believes that a senior lawyer has a huge role to play in a business: “As a General Counsel, you are paid for how you think, and I love finding strategic solutions and adding value to the businesses I support.”
He cites horizon scanning as a key skill for a GC. He believes a good senior lawyer should be able to identify those issues that will affect a business in the future and help establish robust and ethical practices that will manage risk and future proof the business.
This is borne out by Andrew’s passion for sustainability. He is proud of pushing this agenda at ASOS.com and helping the business strive to become a fast fashion brand with integrity. An enormously positive and energetic person, Andrew sees embedding sustainability in businesses as both a great opportunity, as well as essential risk management, no matter what the size of the company or the industry. Indeed, at Berry Bros & Rudd – a family-owned business dating back from 1698 – he worked with the executive committee and the board to set and meet sustainability goals, acutely aware of the legacy being passed on to the next generations.
Andrew left the law in 2019 to pursue this interest further. He returned to Northern Ireland and set up The Inside Trek – a Northern Ireland-focussed responsible hiking business. He is also a Non-Executive Director of the Department of Health in Northern Ireland, and Chair of the Barons Court Project, a small charity operating a homeless and mental health day centre in Hammersmith.
